The Change Institute and the Democracy and Islam Programme (University of Westminster) were pleased to host internationally acclaimed expert on Islam Professor John L. Esposito, who spoke at the University of Westminster on Friday 26 June.

Professor Esposito is the founding Director of the Prince Alwaleed bin Talal Centre for Muslim-Christian Understanding at the Walsh School of Foreign Service, Georgetown University in Washington DC. A Professor of Religion and International Affairs, he is a specialist in Islam including political Islam from North Africa to Southeast Asia.
He was formerly the Loyola Professor of Middle East Studies, Chair of the Department of Religious Studies and Director of the Centre for International Studies at the College of the Holy Cross, in Worcester, Massachusetts. He has served as President of the Middle East Studies Association of North America and the American Council for the Study of Islamic Societies, Vice Chair of the Centre for the Study of Islam and Democracy and is currently a member of the World Economic Forum's Council of 100 Leaders and President of the Executive Scientific Committee for the Maison de la Mediterranee's 2005-2010 project, ‘The Mediterranean, Europe and Islam: Actors in Dialogue’. He is also a member of the EC supported European Network of Experts on Radicalisation, a project managed and co-ordinated by the Change Institute.

Internationally renowned, his expertise is widely sought by a number of institutions including the U.S. Department of State, governments, corporations, universities, and the media.

Professor Esposito is a recipient of the American Academy of Religion’s Martin E. Marty Award for the Public Understanding of Religion (2005) and Pakistan’s Quaid-i-Azzam Award for Outstanding Contributions in Islamic Studies (2005). Publications include 'Unholy War: Terror in the Name of Islam', 'The Islamic Threat: Myth or Reality?', 'Islam and Politics', 'Political Islam: Radicalism, Revolution or Reform', 'Islam and democracy', and most recently 'Who Speaks For Islam? What a Billion Muslims Really Think'.
